Hi, this is Ashley Hamilton. I'm the tax manager at Complete Payroll. I wanted to take a minute to talk about employees who earn wages in multiple states, when one of those states is New York. New York does something a little differently than all the other states, and it usually causes some confusion around year-end tax time. So we thought we'd be a little proactive and clear it up beforehand. Most of the time, when an employee receives their W-2 and they have withholding in multiple states, with one of them being New York, their initial reaction is that the W-2 is wrong. New York is showing all of their wages, and there are also wages in the other state. When added together, it equals more than their federal wages. In most states, they report the amount of wage that was earned in that state. So if you had state withholding in more than one state, you would see the state listed in 15, followed by the amount of wage earned in that state in 16. Beneath that, you would see the next state listed in 15, followed by wages earned in that state in 16. However, in New York, they don't report the total wages made in the state. They report your federal wages in 16. So even if only two weeks of your wages were made in New York, 16 will still show whatever's in 1 for your federal wage. And if you have another state along with New York, when both wage amounts from 16 are added together, you could potentially have more than what's in 1 for your federal wages. Then, most people would ask, "Am I being double taxed on these wages?" And the short answer is no. When filing your personal tax returns with New York, there's a...
